Hey guys I'm Hannah, and my posts on the P10 Teens blog are going to be book reviews. I wish I could give you a main genre that I'm going to be talking about but I've read and enjoyed books anywhere from the Hobbit to Pride and Prejudice. This time I'm reviewing Divergent written by Veronica Roth.
When I first heard of Divergent, I was hesitant to read it. I have a rocky past with dystopian novels (lets just say 1984 and Brave New World were not my favorite books...). I decided to read the first chapter anyways and was hooked. I finished the book in two days. Divergent is about a society that is divided into five factions that each uphold certain characteristics (honesty, bravery, selflessness, love, and brains) to keep the peace. In this society is a girl named Beatrice (Tris) Prior, the protagonist, who is a member of Abnegation (selflessness). When she is old enough to decide what faction she belongs in she switches to Dauntless (bravery). The book is about her surviving initiation and becoming a true member of Dauntless. She makes many friends and enemies along the way (some you never saw coming) through this process. There is of course a romance. Roth somehow found the perfect balance: she didn't ruin the story line by drowning it in everlasting love, but had just enough to make things interesting. There is some foul play going on between the factions (it wouldn't be a dystopian novel without it). what will Tris do? I refuse to spoil the book so you will just have to read it yourself! ;) One thing I will say is Roth always keeps you guessing whats next and holding on to the edge of your seat. Until next time!
